The first review I’m going to do as part of my new series is ‘Devil’, a film by noted twist-loving-if-slightly-crap-but-sometimes-awesome director, M. Night Shyamalan. This film is the one that inspired me to do the series, as I went into it thinking it would be crap, but came out pleasantly surprised. I do mention the twist, but not what it is. I’ve tried to keep this as spolier-free as possible. Continue reading
New series: Mini film reviews. (Mainly horror.)
I know, I know – everyone does them. But I figured ‘why not?’ I’ve seen a lot of them, and I’m a writer, so… Yeah. Continue reading
Pros and cons of being your own boss.
One of the first things that people generally ask when you mention freelancing is the whole ‘being your own boss’ thing. Of course, while I have had a soul-crushing, mind numbing job in the past, it wasn’t for too long – only about 6 months. Yet having now been a freelancer for about the same amount of time, there are a few things I’ve both loved and hated. Continue reading
The ‘C’ word.
Christmas, of course.
Apparently it’s that time of year again. The post-bonfire night Christmas assault is being gradually eased up to full capacity, with some places (Like Tesco/Boots) going full throttle. Continue reading
Let’s talk about pay…
I’m currently trying to think up a pay table for a client that I’ve been working with for a while. While it’s regarding my work, it’s not just about me – it’s for any clients that come to them asking for copy, which I will then write. I’m finding it hard to do, as until recently, I wasn’t really sure of what my value was – and no idea at all as to what companies would pay other companies, even if I was the one writing. Blogging for business.
So far, all of my posts have been personal ones – my thoughts on X, my views on Y. Yet while I did intend for those kind of posts on this blog, I also wanted to share some more practical information, and share the kind of things that I do whilst I’m writing for a client. I’ve written quite a few blog posts for various companies, and these are a few of the tips and tricks I generally put into practice. Continue reading
A few tweaks…
I’ve been fiddling around with the site, and I’m hoping it’s now a little faster. I’ve also added a twitter feed, (although most of you probably came here from there) and added some social media-y share buttons.
So go forth and share!
Mixed feelings.
I’m in a bit of a weird situation at the moment – not weird as in strange, as many before me will have been in the same position - moreover just in that odd time when nothing much is happening, but the horizon is laden with promises of things that may or may not appear and change everything. Continue reading
What do you find hardest to write?
Since setting up as a copywriter a few months back, I’ve had a wide variety of pieces to write. From website copy to inbound marketing, I’ve covered more than I thought I would, and definitely touched on a few subjects that I’ve had to teach myself about before putting fingers to keyboard.
Some of these were long, some short. Some were technical, (try explaining Google’s PageRank system in layman’s terms…) some were simple, (Twitter Glossary for beginners) and most somewhere between the two. Yet over and over, I find myself tripping up on the same thing. It’s not any particular subject, it’s not writing in a certain style – in fact, it’s something that most people I’ve asked are surprised about. Continue reading
cv woes.
Today I bit the bullet, and enquired about a job at a nearby music shop. It’s not that I’m giving up on copywriting, (in fact, today held promise of more work) but that as it stands, it just doesn’t pay the bills. Yet.
Thing is, I hate CV writing. Continue reading
